Stephen took his first conducting position in his final year at  St Olave's Grammar School when he was invited to direct the Chapel Choir. Since then he has conducted numerous ensembles in venues across the UK and abroad. He studied conducting with Peter Stark at the RCM, and Robin Browning at the University of Southampton.

In 2012 Stephen returned to St Olave's Grammar School in a professional capacity as Principal Conductor of the Symphonic Wind Orchestra, enabling him to combine his love of conducting with his love of education work.

In his first year at the University of Southampton he was appointed as Assistant Conductor of the Concert Band with whom he toured France in 2010 . Following a very successful year he was invited to joint MD the Southampton University Brass Band, whom he conducted in the UniBrass competition where his technique, style, and flair was praised by renowned Brass Band Conductors Richard Evans, Phillip Harper and Mike Fowles.

In his final year at the University of Southampton Stephen was the Assistant Conductor of the Symphonic Wind Orchestra. In addition to his regular conducting appointments Stephen was invited to guest conduct the Chamber Choir and invited to conduct a new score to accompany Edward Bond's play Lear by up and coming composer Alexander Glyde-Bates.
